This pencil drawing is a portrait of my 18-year-old daughter, Ivy, also known to her friends as V, sitting on a stool in the middle of her bedroom. This is intended to give the viewer an idea of the literal and mental space that she was in at the time, giving a sense of who she is.
As I grew up and planted my roots in Lakewood, Ohio I can't remember a time when I wasn't creating. Most of my life is devoted to clay as I teach ceramics and run a few pottery studios, but drawing has always been a big part of my life. My portraits are a way to see a specific person through my eyes whereas my ceramic work speaks more from physical qualities in metaphorical sense.
